Students For Unity Presents the TINY FISTS TOUR: Law & Disorder Follow-Up Community Building Event
Join us for an afternoon of engaging workshops designed to hone our skills as organizers and build upon the important work of the Law & Disorder Conference, followed by a community get-together and concert from the artists of the Tiny Fists Tour.
5pm WORKSHOP: Community Organizing 101 Whether you're organizing to free political prisoners, get Coke off campus, destroy the gender binary, or all of the above, this workshop is tailored to the needs of the participants to sharpen our our organizing skills. We'll discuss the nitty gritty of longterm strategy, events, campaigns, coalition building, anti-oppression, and more.
6:15pm WORKSHOP: Queers Against Gentrification What has the role of white and middle class LGBTQ people been in the process of gentrification? This workshop asks tough questions and explores the relationship between colonization, racism, gentrification, and the prison industrial complex.
Creating New Languages for Wellness/Madness: an interactive workshop on the intersections of community, creativity and healing.
What does it mean to be called crazy in a world gone mad? Could what is defined as sickness be sacred? In this flexible workshop format facilitated by original Riot Grrrl cellist/activist/composer mother, bipolar label survivor, founding member of The Icarus Project (TIP), and international performing artist personality BMad Shive will guide participants on a journey of defining wellness and madness on their own terms shaped by one's own experiences and community needs as opposed to a dominant medical paradigm of disease, disorder and deficiency. This capacity based approach to self healing through creativity, narrative and community care is at the core of TIP's founding. TIP is the country's largest peer-run and peer-led online mental health community center, alternative media making hub and voluntary mutual aid support network. Using her chapter in the feminist anthology Live Through This: On Creativity and Self- Destruction as a jumping off point (wherein Shive publishes her "Mad Map" & where her story sits between articles by bell hooks, Nan Goldin, and Kate Bornstein) she will encourage attendants to begin or continue to chart their own inner emotional terrain (or Mad Map) achieving further tools to translate a personal journey into a collective language we can utilize and share on a path of rooting strength in our diversity. Details TBA! This show will be AWESOME. I met these guys at an amazing show in Flagstaff and we've been in love ever since.
ABOUT THE DISCOTAYS:
"Hailing from the Navajo Nation, this duo was destined to make lo-fi, no-wave/post punk music due to lack of diversity and queer visibility. Inspired by the stories of an underground community of fags and dykes, bingers and users, transsexuals, authors and the occasional comedian, something was created that worked. They’ve had the privilege of playing with bands from as far Brooklyn, NY, and were always dumbfounded to find fans in the un-friendliest of places, but always thankful and appreciative. Preferring intimate spaces, they’ve played festivals and venues beyond expectations and hope to perform even more. The Discotays are pushing along, slow and steady, like a showgirl at 4 in the morning."
